My first quilt top of 2013 is finished!
The original Space Dust pattern has a finished size of 88" x 96", I didn't fancy making this size so I adjusted. I printed the templates at 75% and reduced my border size to give a finished size of 60" square. The only thing I will say about this is to make sure all your blocks are the same size after you have added on the 1/4 seam allowance, I didn't and have a few seams out of place!
As there are 44 different templates, there are no cutting instructions to help minimise waste when foundation piecing. This didn't bother me, as I prefer to use more fabric than my seam ripper! I tend to over size my fabric pieces, cutting as I go. It is something to bear in mind if you are thinking of trying the pattern though and may require a bit of pre-planning before you start.
I bought the backing for this in Ikea yesterday, which was the highlight of that trip as I was mostly wandering around trying to find items that are randomly scattered around the showroom in baskets!
So now all I have to decide is how the fuff to quilt it! I know that I want to FMQ swirls on the borders, but what on earth am I going to do with middle bit? I really don't want to have to change thread colour a million times either, so do I use a grey thread?

ReplyDeleteRe: quilting - I think straight lines for the middle against loopiness on the outside would look fab. Being the shameless plagiarist I am, I would quilt it a la Angela Walters as she did Tula's original, which I think were echoing straight lines inside each shape. Or for a similar effect you could do the straight line spiral like you did for your Perv? Happy FMQ'ing!
Gorgeous! I am all for straight lines within the colours too. How you go about it I do not know, but think it needs to have angular quilting.

ReplyDeleteThis is great. Not sure about the quilting, I'm such a fan of FMQ. Maybe something line the figure 8 along each seam line so the inner pieces are left to puff a bit more. Colour is a big problem. Light grey would work well or maybe use 3 to cover the range if colours, beige, light and a med grey.

ReplyDeleteSo pretty! I just finished my rainbow quilt (pics to come) but I did use 6 different threads and tried to follow the rainbow progression. Not necessarily matching the fabrics but changing the threads as the quilt moved across the rainbow.

ReplyDeleteYay for finishing the top!! It looks fabulous!! It's such a great quilt that it would be worth changing thread colours a couple of times. I like your idea of swirls in the border and echo the shapes in the center.

ReplyDeleteOh. So. Awesome! I would use grey - it should blend pretty well (light rather than dark I reckon). How about a giant spiral radiating out from the centre? You could use your walking foot - Kate Conklin did a tutorial on how she did that on her confetti quilt I think?

ReplyDeleteCan't help you with the quilting- I only ever do very simple straight line quilting. It's the only thing I know how to do!
This is so much bigger than I thought from your first photo! I have no idea about quilting as I'm rubbish at it - sorry! It is very beautiful and I'm sure whatever you decide will look awesome as usual :)
ReplyDeleteFabulous, I really love the colours. I've started picking up flat sheets in the NEXT sales and outlet stores - discontinued colours make the cheapest, it means no faffy piecing, they don't shrink and the quality of the cotton is excellent.
